Working with Scientific Text

Depending on the level of the learners, texts from popular scientific magazines or from engaging scientific websites/journals will be used to make the learners acquainted with the field of doing research. Prior to class, students will be handed a variety of articles dealing with different topics that should be interesting to most people. During the lecture, the learners will be taught how to read such an article, to find the elements that hold key importance, and how to report about the key information from the article they have been dealing with in their own micro-article.

sLOVEnsko – Slovakia

Every country has its specific, whether we are talking about history, culture or nature. That’s we it is important to have some information also about this qualities of the new country participant lives in. In these days, lot of countries has marketing agencies that are trying to show the most unique things of it. This workshop uses the videos about Slovakia – in learning process we can use them in many ways, but the main aims are to help participants to know country better, to extend their vocabulary and also to prepare short material from their point of view.

Photo Story

This workshop has the objective to develop competences of migrants of storytelling in a new language with the support of photography. Learning aims are storytelling, verbs describing activity, vocabulary for common topics and working with photos, photo lab apps and photo comics apps. Students train their creativity, digital skills and at the same time tell the story they created themselves. Part of the workshop is also dedicated to the training of teamwork and problem solving. The photo stories created were imaginative and the participants were very active.

Working with News(papers)

In these days information is the most important commodity in our world. Despite of the internet and social media era, news – whether printed or online – should be and are the best way how to reach important information. That is the reason why this workshop works with media, mainly with news.  Firstly, participants get new ability to understand the system of media in concrete country, secondly, they also improve they vocabulary, reading, comprehension and writing skills. The important part of workshop is also writing their own articles about concrete topics.

Orientation in new territory with Google Maps

To don´t know where you are, where you should go and how to ask about the direction or way to get somewhere – these are one of the most important problems of every person living in new country. This workshop helps students with using very simple and reachable application –google maps. The main aims of these activities are – help participants to feel oriented in new territory, to understand principle of language about cities/villages also with the basic phrases, to give them information about public transportation. The creative part of this workshop is to talk about concrete way from one point to another and present it to other participants.

Daily routine by YouTubers

This workshop helps students train vocabulary about common things, what we do during the day. However, the aim is not only communication and grammar training, but also cultural exchange. Youtubers offer such a cultural exchange. They are local influencers, thanks to whom students can get acquainted with local specifics and customs. Finally, students are tasked with producing a similar video about their daily routine.
